The San Rafael was a typical "redonda" caravel with two masts of square sails and one lateen sail. It had a light hull with low immersion, which gave this ship an excellent handling in rough seas. Other ships of this period were heavier and less manageable. The San Rafael took part in the African coasts expedition of the Portuguese explorer Alfonso Goncalvez.
