The ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE was launched 30. June 1934 as the third ship of its class (sister ships " LUETZOW ex. GERMANY ", " ADMIRAL SCHEER "). After it was put into service on 6. Jan.1936 the squadron flagship did numerous trips abroad. At 21. Aug. 1939 the ship left to South America under the command of captain Langsdorf. After the beginning of war raids were held in the south Atlantic. Nine ships with 50.080 t were sunk. 13. Dec. 1939 there was a combat before the La-Plata-delta with two British cruisers. For repairing the damages they headed for the port of Montevideo. The government of Uruguay refused a longer stay. Since it was assumed that the return journey way was blocked by strong english naval forces, the ship was sunk on 17. Dec. 1939 by its own crew.
