Trumpeter HMS Calcutta C Class Light Cruiser 1:700 Scale
Capetown/Carlisle class light cruiser, laid down October 18 1917, launched July 9th 1918, commissioned August 21 1919. Placed in the Reserve Fleet in 1927. Converted to an anti-aircraft cruiser and served in WWII during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. On June 25th 1940, in rough conditions off the Gironde estuary southwestern France, CALCUTTA collided at speed with HMCS FRASER which subsequently sank (Canada's first naval loss of WWII). 66 souls were lost. In 1940/41 CALCUTTA escorted allied convoys in the Mediterranean, and assisted in the evacuation of allied troops from Greece and Crete. On June 1st 1941 CALCUTTA was attacked and sunk by two German Ju-88 bombers off Alexandria with the loss of 116. 255 survivors were picked up by COVENTRY. Battle honours awarded to CALCUTTA were Norway & Dunkirk in 1940, and Mediterranean, Libya, Malta Convoys, Greece & Crete in 1941. Motto 'Per ardua stabilis' (Steadfast in difficulties).
