Tuning fishing has long been practiced both in the Mediterranean (for red tuna weighing up to 900 kg) and the Atlantic (for white albacore tuna weighing 15 kg). Such fishing required solid vessels able to handle ocean conditions yet also advance rapidly. Prior to becoming a true industry, inadequate craft with a tonnage of only 15 to 20 tons were used. Eventually, new ships were built, with a tonnage of 50 to 60 tons, carrying a lot of sail, and calling for a crew of fifteen.
