This gunner wields a ramrod and sponge made from a short section of rope. The rammer was used to ram powder cartridges, felt wads and cannon balls into the gun barrel. The sponge, soaked in water, was designed to extinguish any bits of wad or cartridge which still smouldered in the barrel before reloading a fresh charge. Training and discipline enabled British gunners to maintain a much higher rate of fire than their contemporaries and this was a crucial factor at Trafalgar.
