The gun captain was responsible for the laying of his gun, to ensure that shots were accurately aimed. He controlled the gun crew and was responsible to a midshipman or a lieutenant for the effective fighting of his gun under battle conditions. These were the crew members most responsible for the disciplined and rapid firing of the Victory's armament at Trafalgar. Their gunnery was far superior to the relatively untrained French and Spaniards.
