The Zuikaku was completed in September 1941 as the second ship of the shokaku class aircraft carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was one of six carriers engaged in the Pearl harbor attack of December 1941. Following the successful attack on Pearl Harbor, she participated in the Ceylon operations, the Battle of the Coral sea, Battle of the Eastern solomons, and the Battle of the Marianas, and she safely returned from all these sorties.
