The first great ship to be completely designed and constructed by the French. On the orders of Cardinal Richelieu, the work was entrusted to the famous master craftsman Charles Morieur of Dieppe. The ship was completed in 1636 in the La Roche Bernard shipyard and was one of the most imposing vessels of that time.
She was built to compete with the ever larger ships of other European navies, England in particular – there is every reason to believe that, upon hearing about a huge ‘super ship’ being built in England, the king and Cardinal Richelieu felt compelled to compete. The English vessel was the Sovereign of the Seas, the world’s first true three decker. La Couronne was a lot more conservative in comparison. However. La Couronne was a mighty vessel, and well designed, carrying around 70 cannons, and about the same size as the Sovereign, la Couronne was a very stable gun platform.
The La Couronne ship model kit contains: Sculptured ornamentation, figurehead, stern lanterns and other sculptured ornaments are beautifully gilded metal. Blocks, deadeyes, belaying pins, gratings and cannon carriages are walnut. Her 64 cannon and many other fittings are solid brass. Double plank-on-bulkhead construction uses pre-cut poplar for frames and keel. Planking is done with thin strips of walnut and limewood. Masts, deck and display cradle and other wooden parts are fashioned from tanganyka, beech, mahogany, and maple. Twelve sheets of plans and step-by-step instructions make for trouble-free construction..
